Birds in New Jersey 2014
November 2014 - It starts to get cold, and someone likes peanuts.
10 November 2014, continued. Two ground-feeding regulars these days: dark-eyed junco (left) and white-throated sparrow (right).

Bad news for the birds who like using the mesh sunflower seed feeder: A squirrel has discovered it likes the feeder, too.

It's simple: hang upside down,

grab a seed,

and munch away.

15 November 2014. A very tiny woodpecker? No, it's little black-capped chickadee.

White-throated sparrow, mourning dove.

16 November 2014. It starts to get cold.

To put out fresh water now requires a hammer.

A lot of house sparrows. The males have the dark area around the eyes and going down below the beak, with a spray of black
on their breast. They have dark-coloured beaks; the females have yellow beaks.

This has become a charming daily routine: Put out some peanuts, then wait for the blue jays to soar in and grab them and then
fly away with their prize.

A mockingbird comes in once a day to take a drink. It doesn't eat anything; it just wants fresh water.

Go on. You know you want it.

A special guest showed up: a Carolina wren.

A tufted titmouse attempts to make a landing on the suet feeder, but, wait a minute, what's that little brown bird doing there?
